Solo and Small Firm Conference

New Jersey Institute For Continuing Legal Education LogoKingston Law Group’s Senior Attorney, Hanan M. Isaacs, will present on “What I Wish I Knew in 2019” along with two other seasoned presenters.

Said Isaacs, “As business people in the law, we are in transition no matter what we are doing and when we are doing it.  Life in the law is always changing.  We have to stay aware of career growth and succession planning constantly, with an emphasis on the planning part.  The difference between effective succession planning and a crisis is . . . time.  The better we prepare, the smoother the process, and the more satisfying the outcome.”

Different lawyers will approach career/succession planning differently.  Some will choose to sell their practice and leave, which is legal under the NJ Rules of Professional Conduct.  Others will take on a more junior associate or law partner to build in lawyer coverage and succession planning.  Yet others will merge their practice with another group, staying in the practice, and getting lawyer coverage, succession planning, and growth/credit for cross-referrals of clients and business. Still, others will become “of counsel” to another firm, for the benefits of a merger without management responsibilities.

As the Solo Practice and Small Firm Section, we must serve our members in transition and succession planning.  The Section could be a NATURAL Broker for younger and more senior lawyers to form a succession plan.  It could be lawyers who are 10 years apart in age and experience, both seeking stability in an uncertain world.  It could be people with expertise in different practice domains, who can cross-sell and develop the practice along with younger associates and paralegals.
