Children’s Names May Have Led To Loss of Custody

Many claims have been used in order to try to sway a judge to grant child custody to one parent over another, but could a child’s name be an indicator of bad parenting?

A heated debate over the names of the children belonging to a New Jersey couple has heightened with the sudden removal of their children. Their child custody woes seem to stem directly from their decisions to name their children, one of which is named Adolf Hitler and another JoyceLynn Aryan Nation. The third child’s name is Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie.

Their problems began when the couple went to get a birthday cake decorated for their son, Adolf. The clerks at ShopRite who were asked to decorate the cake refused and reported the incident to child services. Since then, all three children have been in foster care. A New Jersey appeals court recently made the decision permanent, stripping the parents of custody. They, along with three other individuals, protested the decision made by the court, which they say is based solely on the names of the children.

The parents are trying to contest the decision, saying it was within their right to name their child whatever they felt. Both parents defended the idea that their children were not growing up to be killers, but acknowledged the hate that lies in the history of two of their children’s names.

The court defended its decision by citing evidence found in their custody case last year which showed that domestic violence had taken place in the home, putting the children at risk for emotional and physical injury. The parents stand by their statement that the court did not find any evidence of abuse or neglect. According to them, a judge will make another decision by December about whether or not the children will see their home again.
